Lemon & Herb African/Zulu Chicken and Dumplings

Last weekend I decided to visit my friend Ntando who’s a new mom, so I thought I relieve her a bit and took over her kitchen. And BOOM!!! She had an African Chicken in her fridge, we call it “Inkukhu yesiZulu” (Zulu Chicken). This is the chicken that the Zulu tribe keeps as a possession in their homes, and if it’s from the Xhosa tribe, we call it a Xhosa Chicken. I know 🙂

Soooo since the weather was chilly, I decided to make dumplings. When making this chicken, you must be prapared to spend about 3 hours in the kitchen as the meat is “very hard”, some jokingly call it the “Hard Body Chicken” LOL. I had so much fun nonetheless…

Here’s the recipe:





  • Full chicken cut into pieces
  • 3 tsp Lemon & Herb spice
  • 1 tsp Garlic & Pepper spice
  • 1/2 teaspoon Paprika
  • 1 tsp Parsley
  • 1 Lemon, squeezed (lemon juice)
  • 2tbsp Olive oil
  • 1 Onion (finely chopped)
  • 1 cup water

(Combine the above ingredients (excl. water and onion) and marinade overnight for more flavour)


Dumplings ingredients:

  • 3 cups all purpose flour
  • 3 tsp baking powder
  • 2 1/2 cups warm water

Mix all the ingredients and make 6 balls


Gooi the whole chicken mixture into the pot, onions and water and cook on medium heat. You won’t need to add more oil as the chicken already has too much fat (see pic below). Cook for 2 hours.

Then add your 6 dumpling balls on top of the chicken and parsley on top for that “herby” aroma on dumplings too (see pic)


Cook for about an hour. You can keep adding some water if your soup is too thick.

And Viola!
